Cattery Reputations are Important
Browsing Cat forums, a recent FaceBook Post raised an important question about how to properly evaluate a Maine Coon Kitten Breeder when looking to purchase a Maine Coon Kitten in Florida. In today’s digital age, many transactions take place online, making it possible for kittens to be located on the other side of the country or even on another continent.
I have previously written about the prevalence of Scam breeder websites and the importance of health clearances for breeding cats. However, the Facebook post prompted me to delve deeper into how potential Maine Coon Kitten buyers in Florida and the USA can identify quality and responsibility in a breeder.
Several years ago, I learned about the TICA Association’s Outstanding Cattery Award, which requires an annual inspection by a licensed veterinarian. At Florida Maine Coon Cattery, I am provided with a form each year from TICA that must be filled out and signed by a veterinarian after a home visit.

To achieve the status of an Outstanding Maine Coon Cattery, various areas of the cattery must pass inspection with a high score. The first area evaluated is the overall facility, which includes a description of the physical layout of the cattery. In our case, the breeding females occupy their own space in the house along with a large outdoor predator-proof enclosure, while litters are confined to a bedroom when young for obvious reasons. The retirees and breeding males have access to about one-third of the house, as well as a large predator-proof outdoor Catio like the ladies have.
Other factors such as lighting, ventilation, cat safety, heating, and cooling are also assessed during the inspection. Caged facilities must meet the minimum space requirements for each cat, although we prefer to allow our Maine Coons to roam freely, and they do, 90% of the time, we only use cages when necessary, such as after surgery or a bath, and for mating safety.
Feeding and fresh filtered water availability are additional areas that are evaluated, with a focus on providing fresh food on a regular schedule and ensuring a continuous supply of water for the cats. By adhering to these standards and undergoing regular inspections, breeders can demonstrate their commitment to quality and responsibility in their breeding practices. We ensure that accessible and clean litter pans are always available, and we manage litter to keep it refreshed and clean. We use bedding pellets for litter and scoop at least twice daily to maintain a high standard of cleanliness.

Health care is another crucial aspect that we prioritize, which includes vaccinations, monitoring the overall appearance and weight of our cats, grooming, parasite control, and providing prompt medical care when needed. We find it important to manage these aspects and keep detailed records of each cat for reference. We also, maintain a schedule for nail clips and comb-outs to ensure the well-being of our beautiful Maine Coon Kittens and Cats.
Socialization of our cats is also a key focus, although it can be challenging with a house full of cats to ensure that each one receives adequate attention. However, it is an essential part of our role as breeders to ensure the well-being and happiness of our cats.
Having our cattery evaluated annually is a way for us to demonstrate to potential kitten buyers all over Florida and the USA that our kittens are raised in a clean and healthy environment.
